Education: for a future ready nation
Kal Ka Classroom Podcast series
Trailer
The government of India passed the right to education act in 2009, securing free and compulsory education to all children between the ages of 6 to 14 years. And India currently has 487 million children. So how does a country like ours provide a good quality education to nurture young people into active citizens of a vibrant democracy?
In this podcast series, Tata Trusts aims to highlight the progress, celebrate the achievements and understand the challenges faced by educators. So let’s understand how to create Kal Ka Classroom.
These podcasts are available on other platforms like Apple podcast, Spotify, Google music and others.
Ep.1: Literacy through Libraries
Today, a book can be bought with just a touch of a button. What’s more, it could be entirely read on a small device. Despite these technological advancements, there are children who cannot access books at all in India.
Tata Trusts’ Kal Ka Classroom talks about their initiatives that work towards improving the Indian education system. In this episode, we learn about the path-breaking work that the Parag Initiative has done to encourage building of local, community, school and personal libraries of children’s literature. In particular we look at how the district of Yadgir in Karnataka, during the COVID-19 pandemic, when children lost all contact with their schools, teachers and libraries, made literature accessible.
Ep.2: How QR Codes Won a Teacher a $1 Million
Ever since the pandemic, QR codes have become essential to our lives. From reading the menu at a restaurant to making online payments, everything can happen in just one scan. But, how can QR codes become a part of a child’s education?
Tata Trusts’ Kal Ka Classroom talks about their initiatives that work towards improving the Indian education system. In this episode, we draw inspiration from Ranjitsinh Disale, a teacher who started putting QR codes in school textbooks and eventually won him the Global Teacher Prize in 2020.
Ep.3: Life Lessons Through Cricket
In India, cricket is not just a sport, it’s an emotion. People are either glued to their television sets or are seen in a gully playing a match with their friends. But what if cricket wasn’t just about playing a game, but that taught you how to be a better at life?
Tata Trusts’ Kal Ka Classroom talks about their initiatives that work towards improving the Indian education system. In this episode, we learn about the ‘Life Through Cricket’ initiative that taught underprivileged children from Mumbai who barely attended school and didn’t care about their education, and made them confident, focused, and responsible young adults.
Ep.4: Foundational Literacy, Regional Languages & Children’s Literature
In this special episode of Tata Trusts’ Kal Ka Classroom, Amrita Patwardhan, Head of Education at Tata Trusts and Shailaja Menon, Associate Professor at Azim Premji University dive into understanding foundational literacy in India; the value of integrating regional languages into early learning as well as how children’s literature can be key to encouraging children to read and write.

A child who reads will be an adult who thinks. The #Parag initiative of Tata Trusts is providing rural children quality story books in regional languages, to engage them in joyful reading. With this, we aim to turn around the usual resistance towards reading, and inculcate an active reading culture. We aspire for children to blossom into thoughtful individuals who will go on to become the powerful voices of the nation.
