About the theme
Recognising the urgent need to equip India’s workforce with industry-relevant skillsets, the Government of India’s Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) has partnered with the Tata Education and Development Trust (TEDT) to set up and operate two world-class Indian Institute of Skills (IIS) in Mumbai and Ahmedabad.
Tata Indian Institute of Skills (TIIS) aspires to be a premier training institution in the country, equipped with world-class vocational training facilities. The institute plans to provide training in highly specialised areas such as factory automation, digital manufacturing, mechatronics, artificial intelligence, data analytics, and additive manufacturing, catering to both the services and manufacturing sectors, as well as other emerging businesses.
TIIS was established by Tata Trusts in March 2020 under the Companies Act, 2013, with the primary objective of building an industry-ready workforce. TIIS Mumbai will occupy a 4.17-acre plot of land within the National Skill Training Institute (NSTI) campus in Chunabhatti, Mumbai, while TIIS Ahmedabad will be spread over 20 acres in Nasmed, Gandhinagar.
Although construction for both campuses is expected to start soon, TIIS has already made strides by collaborating with renowned industry partners to launch five short-term courses — Industrial Robotics with Fanuc India, Industrial Automation with SMC India, and two culinary courses and a core housekeeping course with Taj Skyline. These courses have received a positive response so far, with a total of 792 students successfully completing their training as of June 2023.
These short-term courses were selected and designed following a rigorous demand-mapping exercise conducted in May 2022, during which the TIIS team visited several organisations across various industrial segments to gain insights into their specific skilling requirements. This step ensures that the courses offered by TIIS closely align with industrial requirements. In the coming years, TIIS will also develop and offer long-term courses.
To deliver high-quality training to a maximum number of individuals, a unique hub-and-spoke model has been envisioned for both TIIS Mumbai and TIIS Ahmedabad. Both campuses will function as central hubs, equipped with state-of-the-art facilities for academics, research, and residential purposes. Each hub will be further supported by smaller centres, or 'spokes,' to maximise outreach.
In line with its technology-first ecosystem, TIIS will also leverage augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) technologies to conduct its training programmes. This innovative approach will not only enable TIIS to facilitate skill development in remote areas in a cost-effective manner, but also enhance the overall learning experience for all its students.
To keep pace with the ever-evolving needs of various industrial segments, TIIS will soon introduce additional courses in advanced manufacturing, electric vehicles, electronics, and hospitality & services.
