Springshed management in the north east
The Tata Trusts, along with their associate organisation — the Northeast Initiative Development Agency (NEIDA) -- and a consortium of partners, have undertaken a springshed management programme in the north east. The state of Nagaland has been selected as the region faces acute drinking water shortage, its people are dependent on spring water for domestic consumption, and the water is of inadequate quality. Nagaland depends on spring water for its drinking water as well as agricultural requirement.
The aim of the project is to revive and conserve springs, and provide water security by adopting scientific methods on springshed management in 11 districts of the state covering 100 villages. NEIDA has also trained local community members as para-hydrogeologists with knowledge on basic groundwater management, geology and hydrogeology, springs and aquifers, and springshed development.
