About the theme
India stands at a crucial juncture today with regard to employment. Despite having nearly half of its population in the working-age group, the manufacturing sector faces a growing shortage of skilled workforce. One of the reasons is that more young people gravitate toward the information technology (IT) and services industries.
Tata Indian Institute of Skills (TIIS) was established to bridge this critical gap in manufacturing-related skills and to equip India's youth with industry-relevant expertise. TIIS has founded two skilling institutes: Indian Institute of Skills Ahmedabad (IIS Ahmedabad) and Indian Institute of Skills Mumbai (IIS Mumbai).
A Section 8 company, TIIS is a partnership between the Tata Education and Development Trust (TEDT) and the Government of India’s Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE), with additional support from the Government of Gujarat for the Ahmedabad campus. TIIS is modelled on the globally renowned Institute of Technical Education (ITE), Singapore, and strives to set a new benchmark in vocational education in the country.
With expansive campuses spanning 4 acres in Mumbai and 20 acres in Ahmedabad, the TIIS institutes are designed to address the rising demand for skilled professionals in Indian industry. The campuses offer cutting-edge training in emerging sectors of advanced manufacturing, electric mobility and hospitality, and are aligned with the Make in India initiative to equip India's youth with the skills needed for a future-ready industrial workforce.
Building industry-ready skills with advanced infrastructure
TIIS’ approach to skilling includes leveraging the expertise of trainers (with an average of 8.3 years of industry experience), having small-batch sizes for personalised attention, using world-class equipment for training, and placing a strong focus on 21st century skills. This integrated model ensures that TIIS trainees gain the skills, knowledge and confidence required to thrive in today's dynamic job market.
The courses offered include advanced manufacturing programmes such as Industrial Automation, Robotics & Automation for Smart Factories, Industrial 3D Printing Design and Manufacturing, Advanced Arc Welding Techniques, and CNC Operations. In the electric vehicle domain, specialised training is provided for EV two- and three-wheeler service specialists and EV battery specialists.
Both institutes have state-of-the-art infrastructure to support 70% hands-on training and equip trainees with practical skills using cutting-edge technologies sourced from global industry leaders. For instance, the institutes train students on Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machines made by FANUC, Siemens and Makino.
Similarly, the metrology labs feature advanced systems from Mitutoyo, Hexagon and ZEISS, while welding training is provided on equipment from Lincoln Electric, Fronius and ABB.
Real-world industry needs
The institutes have partnered with SMC, Schneider Electric, FESTO and Siemens to offer real-world training in mechatronics and automation on industry-standard machinery. In the additive manufacturing labs, students train on cutting-edge tools from Phillips, Markforged, and Formlabs, while the robotics training features systems from ABB, FANUC, MIR and Universal Robots.
To enable hands-on training, TIIS has entered collaborations with industrial partners such as Tata Motors, Tata AutoComp, Ather, TVS, Hioki, Lucas-Nuelle and Devise for electrical mobility. Meanwhile, its collaboration with Rexroth, a Bosch company, is focused on the adoption of best practices.
TIIS’ strong thrust on practical learning, modern equipment and expert guidance ensures that trainees are job-ready and equipped to meet the evolving demands of industry from day one.
Empowering careers through inclusion
Since inception, TIIS has trained over 1,300 candidates for careers in advanced manufacturing, electric mobility, and hospitality. It offers a wide array of courses that range from 8 to 12 weeks in duration. Eligibility criteria have been framed to accommodate students from diverse educational backgrounds, ranging from youth who have passed Class 12 to Industrial Training Institute (ITI) graduates, diploma holders and BTech graduates.
Key achievements
TIIS’ outcomes include:
- 70% of trainees in Batch 1 secured placements, with 26% receiving two or more job offers
- Collaborations with over 70 organisations, including multinational corporations and medium and small manufacturing enterprises such as TVS Motors, Ather Energy, Ola, SKF, ABB, and the Aditya Birla Group
- Highest placement offers of ₹4.5 lakh per annum (BTech), ₹3.8 lakh per annum (Diploma), and ₹3.4 lakh per annum (ITI), reflecting the industry's trust in Tata IIS-trained professionals
- Six batches of aspiring chefs trained under Professional Cooking Skills course in hospitality sector; alumni placed with renowned brands like Indian Accent, Marriott Hotels, Indian Hotels, Novotel and Mocha
With its state-of-the-art infrastructure, industry-aligned curriculum and commitment to excellence, TIIS will continue to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of India's sunrise sectors by training the country’s youth in industry-ready vocational skills.
