Walking into Lalnunkimi's greenhouse in Saitluang Zau in Champhai district of Mizoram, is like walking through a fresh vegetable market. Beautiful bunches of tomatoes, cabbage, pumpkin leaves, beans, and chillies hang from trellises, their colours a vibrant tapestry against the backdrop of the lush Mizo hills. But unlike a bustling market, this haven of produce hums with a quiet hum – the gentle whir of a ventilation system and the contented chirping of crickets seeking refuge amongst the greenery. Here, amidst the verdant rows, thrives the story of a farmer, her innovation, and the transformative power of knowledge.
With a little help from NEIDA
Lalnunkimi was able to establish this green oasis with support and knowledge gained from her training imparted by North East Initiative Development Agency (NEIDA, an associate organisation of Tata Trusts). Supported by the Tata Trusts, NEIDA works towards building an inclusive enabling environment to undertake climate smart agriculture and livestock practices, and thereby, irreversibly increase the annual income of the people in the North-East region.
Like many in Mizoram, Lalnunkimi had access to community land for farming but was unable to make it profitable. Because of the hilly terrain, it was impossible to bring mechanical help to make the land cultivable. That’s when she began her learning journey with NEIDA and diversified her livelihood options.
Through NEIDA, Lalnunkimi learned about agricultural practices that could enhance her land and cultivate profitable crops. She acquired knowledge on water resource management and soil rehabilitation techniques, enabling her to establish a greenhouse with seasonal vegetables, generating up to Rs1.5 lakh per season. Apart from greenhouse vegetable cultivation, Lalnunkimi owns a fish pond, various livestock including chickens and pigs, and has also managed to grow apples, pomegranates, and red plums for sale – all of which add to her annual income.
With her newfound knowledge, she dreams of expanding her fruits and vegetable business to three more plots that are not currently, cultivated by her.
"I am very thankful for the professional training and input supply given by NEIDA.…my produce has increased a lot and I’ll do more better in the future.” Says Lalnunkimi
Lalnunkimi's story is a beacon of hope, not just for the 50 farmers in Saitluang Zau, but for countless others across the Northeast. It's a testament to the power of knowledge, coupled with dedication and a little help, to transform lives and landscapes. With each meticulously spaced seed and every drop of water strategically directed, Lalnunkimi isn't just cultivating crops, she's cultivating a brighter future for her family.
