Tribal area development project, Gujarat

The tribal area development project is a central India initiative of the Tata Trusts. It spans several states including Gujarat, and covers several interventions that centre around agriculture and horticulture, financial services, developing markets and value addition, dairy development and animal husbandry, support irrigation and water saving technologies, drinking water and sanitation, nutrition, elementary education, skill development and community institutions.

Overall, close to 467 villages are being targeted in the state of Gujarat, including 200 villages in the districts of Dang and Dahod. These districts have the lowest access to sanitation amongst all demographic groups and a relatively higher population of scheduled tribes. The Trusts work with the following implementation partners at the district-level:

  • Junagadh: Aga Khan Rural Support Programme (India), Krishi Vigyan Kendra-Ambuja Cement Foundation, Gujarat Heavy Chemicals Limited (GHCL), and Sikshan Samaj Kalyan Kendra
  • Jamnagar:  Aga Khan Rural Support Programme, India, JV Nariya Trust, and Tata Chemicals Society for Rural Development (TCSRD)
  • Porbandar:  Aga Khan Rural Support Programme, India
  • Bhavnagar: Mahiti Center for Rural Development, and Vivekanand Research and Training Institute
  • Amreli: Vivekanand Research and Training Institute and Aga Khan Planning and Building Service (India)
  • Kutch: Vivekanand Research and Training Institute
  • Dang:  Aga Khan Rural Support Programme (India)
  • Dahod: Sadguru Foundation

The Tata Trusts have also extended grants to its nodal agency, the Collectives for Integrated Livelihood Initiatives (CInI), for implementing the tribal area development programme.
