Badminton RDC online training with P. Gopichand
Challenges Faced
Due to Covid related lockdowns, most of the centres were officially closed for training, thereby affecting
the achievement of planned targets.
Lack of devices (smartphones, tablets and laptops) and patchy internet connectivity posed constraints
for many beneficiaries in accessing online fitness training sessions.
Good Practices
To ensure sustainability, the grassroots centres under the Mizoram Badminton Initiative are managed by
local communities, in partnership with Mizoram Badminton Association. These local communities decide
the quantum of fees to be charged per student, depending on their ability to pay. Fees thus collected will
help in ensuring that in the next couple of years, at least 50% of these centres will be able to operate
without the Trusts’ support.
Forging partnerships with the government for setting up infrastructure and funding operations in the
long run, has helped reduce the dependency on the Trusts’ support. Notably, the grassroots and
excellence Academy in Odisha has been operating with infrastructure provided by the state government.
Workshops and education programmes for stakeholders in the sporting ecosystem are part of all the
sports programmes. These interactions provide the necessary expertise to develop capacities of local
bodies, which in turn enhance the quality of their work and ensure sustainability.
