voluntary fortification commenced for five staples,
with faster adoption in the oil and milk industries.
Currently, 70 of India’s top national and regional
brands have 113 fortified products available in the
retail market. In the government safety net
programmes, 17 states and 4 union territories have
so far adopted fortification of their chosen
commodities at the district level (all districts) in the
ICDS, Mid-Day Meal and Public Distribution System
programmes.
The Trusts worked closely with The India Nutrition
Initiative (TINI) to target fortification of 200 Lakh
Litres Per Day (LLPD) of milk during the year,
benefitting approximately 133 million people and
helping reduce the insufficiency of Vitamin A and D,
significantly. Six state cooperative dairies continued
fortification even after support from the Trusts
ended; besides, various private dairies commenced
fortifying milk on their own. The partnership with
National Dairy Development Board resulted in a
significant scale-up of the ‘Gift Milk Scheme’, i.e.
provision of milk to school children.
