Tata Trusts partnered with Slum Soccer and Football Players Association of India for team India's participation in the Homeless World Cup 2016. The programme envisions football as a tool for social upliftment of the downtrodden and at-risk youth. The focus is on advocating global awareness of and a solution to homelessness. The current edition of the Homeless World Cup kicked off in Glasgow on July 9, 2016.
With more than 8,000 at-risk youth enrolled in 37 centres across India, Slum Soccer has specific programmes tailored around the medium of football. The Indian teams for the Homeless World Cup have been selected through extensive trials from this vast catchment pool of underrepresented talent.
"We believe that the power of football can equip people with the skills and confidence to improve their lives.”
