Performing Arts

Performing arts in India broadly span across three disciplines — music, dance and theatre — and the Trusts support programmes in all three. Instead of focussing on each discipline separately, the strategy of the Trusts is to work across geographies, work with institutions and work at the grass roots level. Programs linking across the three thrusts focus on the enhancement of livelihoods of artistes, strengthen practice itself — both, the neglected traditional forms and the emerging contemporary ones.

Some of the projects undertaken in this vertical are:

  • “Brahmaputra Raga Jazz”, an initiative to nurture young musical talent from the North eastern states, by Banyan Tree Events.
  • “Transforming Culture, Transforming Lives”, a project by Kattaikkuttu Sangam training children from underprivileged districts in the heritage theatre form of Kattaikkuttu.
  • Idea to Institution, has seen the Trusts seed Dhrupad Sansthan and Attakkalari that have seen dhrupad, the oldest form of Indian Classical music, and contemporary dance, established as practices in India.
  • Fellowships to practitioners and artistes in all three disciplines through supporting organizations like Ninasam, Kalavaahini and Dhrupad Sansthan.
